Proposing ideas Queenstown
If you’ve landed here, you’re probably planning one of the biggest moments of your life and honestly, that’s pretty special. I’ve been lucky enough to help plan over hundreds of proposals now, and every single one still gives me butterflies. Queenstown is full of magic, whether you want jaw-dropping views or something low-key and meaningful. So here’s my guide, part personal favourite spots, part insider tips, and all about creating a moment they’ll never forget.
My Go-To Secret (but not so secret) Spots
These are the locations that don’t need a big production just you, your person, and a bit of thoughtful planning.
Bob’s Cove: A short walk and suddenly, you're in a little slice of turquoise heaven. It’s peaceful, stunning, and doesn’t feel like it’s five minutes from town.
Moke Lake: This place is ridiculously scenic. I’d go early morning or late afternoon for that perfect golden light.
Lake Hayes: Possibly one of the most romantic spots around. The reflections on the water, the willow trees, it’s got that feel.
If you want to catch the moment on camera without giving the game away, hire a photographer who can pretend to be another tourist just enjoying the view. It’s a clever way to get the photos without ruining the surprise.
The Helicopter Moment
If you're dreaming of something that feels like it's straight out of a movie, a helicopter proposal might just be it. With just the two of you and that surreal silence you only get in places like this.
It’s intimate. Breathtaking. Completely unforgettable.
The best part? The pilots are absolute pros at keeping things quiet. If you're planning to bring a photographer along, your partner will just think they’re another person coming along for the ride, snapping scenery and enjoying the views. Everyone plays it cool, calm, and collected, never giving away what’s about to happen.
A few local companies that offer these kinds of experiences:
And if you want to make the moment even more special maybe a simple picnic tucked into the snow, or a chilled bottle of bubbles ready when you land, it’s those little touches that turn a stunning location into a memory you’ll both hold onto forever.
If You Want to Plan the Whole Day
I love a good build-up to a proposal. If you want to make a full day of it, here’s a flow I’ve helped clients with before, and it always turns out beautifully.
Start at The Boatshed – grab a coffee or brunch with a lake view and ease into the day. Its a busy place so prepare to wait a little.
Plan something low-key but meaningful – maybe a lakeside stroll, a wine tasting, or a quick detour to one of those quiet proposal spots above.
Pop the question – somewhere that feels just right.
Celebrate over dinner – Queenstown has no shortage of incredible places. Here are my personal favourites:
Billy’s at Ayrburn: The newest and hottest place to go! Billy’s has just opened their doors and you will not be disappointed. In spring and summer, their garden is blooming. It’s a fairytale setting and would be stunning for either the proposal or the celebration.
Botswana Butchery: Their espresso martini is the best I’ve ever had, hands down. And their food is wow!
Amisfield: This is your go-to if you want to really spoil yourselves. You’ll need to book well in advance, and yes, it’s a bit of a splurge but the food is out of this world. its art.
It’s the Little Things
I always tell people this: it’s not just about the where. It’s about the little touches. That’s what makes someone feel thought of and loved.
Write them a card. Leave them a note in the morning. Organise breakfast in bed before the big moment. And this is a cheeky little tip if she’s someone who likes her nails done, maybe have a quiet word with her nail tech a week or two beforehand. A soft nude or one-tone polish makes the ring pop in photos.
You know them better than anyone. That’s the magic. Plan this day for them, not just what looks good. And if you need someone in your corner helping make it happen, that’s where I come in.
One Last Thought
Queenstown is more than just a destination, it’s a feeling. Whether you go all-out or keep it beautifully simple, if it’s planned with love, it’ll be perfect. And if you need a helping hand, you know where we are.
